Rally of Tasmania 2006
WHAT IS THE 2006 TOLL SHIPPING RALLY TASMANIA RALLY? The 2006 Toll Shipping Rally Tasmania/Heritage Rally is an all tarmac surfaced Special Stage Rally conducted under an Organising Permit issued by the Confederation of Australian Motor Sport (CAMS) and split into two groups: Group 1 the Heritage Rally (Classic) section is for Historic and Classic competition cars built from 1947 to 31st December 1981 and Group 2 the Rally Tasmania (Modern) section is for early modern and modern cars built after 1981. There are 17 Special Stages, which are conducted on public A, B and C class tarmac roads ranging from 2km to 26km in length. The total distance will be approximately 600km, of which approximately 165km will be Special Stages. The rally uses the A-A timing method common to all Australian ‘Super Series' and World Rally Championship events. Road Sections are those sections of the route located between successive time controls. They may or may not include Special Stages, and will be used to move the field through areas that are unsuitable for competition. A target time shall be set for each Road Section. Early or late arrival at the time control at the end of a Road Section will involve a road penalty, however late time (extra time) will also accrue at the rate of 1 minute per minute or part thereof for the time taken in excess of the time allowed for the Road Section. COMPETITION SUMMARY The 2006 Toll Shipping Rally Tasmania commenced in Burnie in dry humid conditions and as predicted the smaller four wheel drive vehicles were more suited to the road conditions but Jim Richards and Barry Oliver in their Porsche 911 GT2 were able to hold onto the lead that he gained for their third win at the event.
